The Hundred Dresses

I just read a  little book called, The Hundred Dresses, written by Eleanor Estes.    I was surprised to see it had been written clear back in 1944.  If you read it you will agree it is an ageless story that teaches a very important message.   It only takes about a half an hour to read it but you will ponder about it much longer than that.    I think it’s especially good to read it with your children this time of year.

It is the story of  how a little immigrant girl, Wanda, tries to fit in to her new school.    After Wanda tells some of the girls in her class that she has 100 beautiful dresses hanging in her closet at home, they begin to tease her mercilessly because she always wears the same old, blue dress to school.

It is a touching reminder of how untrue the old saying “sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me” is.     Reading this book with your children or grandchildren is an opportunity to discuss how we can all treat each other with more kindness and be careful in what we say.    It shows how difficult it is to be the one who is totally different, and how easy it is to go along with the crowd (there is safety in numbers) even when your conscience is prodding you not to.   It is particularly important as we enter the holiday season for us all to remember those around us who are less fortunate, or lonely, or left out.

I’m sure you can find it at your local library!

  1. I remember reading that book when I was young. I don’t remember exactly how old i was…..maybe 3rd or 4th grade. I remember it so vividly though! I loved it.

  2. Thank you for reminding me about this book. I checked it out at the library last week and Luca and I have both read it and we love it. It is a sweet story.
