Putting The House On A Diet

We have five very large bookcases. I mean we have five VERY large bookcases. We’ve also had little stashes of books all over the house, some in the basement in Lynn’s office. Some upstairs in my office … some stacked in the corner of my bedroom, a few in the living room in a basket, and some shelves of the book cases were over stacked. I decided we could only keep as many books as fit on our shelves. I thought maybe I would be shipping maybe a box or two out to the Deseret Industries but to my amazement we had five big boxes of books! FIVE! The good thing is that donations to the D.I. are tax deductible! The other good thing is that there are some good books there that other people can get some use out of.

One of this year’s goals is to downsize … SIMPLIFY. I decided that downsizing is almost as much fun as losing weight. Seeing the boxes go out the door is like stepping on the scale and discovering five pounds have vanished. I guess I’ve put the house on a diet.

  1. Hello Edna,

I found your site through your story on Elder Storytelling. I loved your story and decided to comment on your blog.

About today’s post, my husband and I have cleared out two houses that were left to us by his Mother and brother. Both places were a nightmare of “STUFF” that meant nothing to anyone. Movie stubs and programs and doilies Aunt Sadie made . In the brother’s house, tools in the china closet, loose nuts and bolts, batteries that weighed a ton. You name it they had it.

Because we lived through the messes, we decided that when we die our children will find our house in “Up to date” order. There will be nothing in here that no one would want. We want everything we have here to be of value to someone.

So, a few years ago, we cleared out the junk we had been saving all these years and now the house is in fine shape to either sell or rent with very little effort.

I hope you read a story I wrote for Ronni. It is to be printed on Friday. See you there!

  2. That is amazing how many books that must be!
I love the filling of simplifying, hence the yearly yard sales. It’s my goal this year as Well, since we’ll be moving to ID at the end of the year or early 09.

  3. I feel like my house is constantly being put on a diet but it never loses weight….sounds familiar!
