One More Day

My daughter records Oprah so she can watch them when she has some free time and I happened to watch one last night that really touched me.   Mitch Albom, author of “For One More Day” was a guest, along with Kris Carlson whose husband Richard is known for writing “Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff”.

Mitch Albom talked about his book which has been made into a television movie that will be aired Sunday night.   It is the story of a man who dies but is given one more day to spend with his mother.     Kris Carlson talked about a book she wrote from a letter her husband had written to her before his death this past year on the things he would say if he had one hour to live.

So the question Oprah was asking was … if you could bring one person back to spend one day with, who would it be and what would you do?    I would love to see my mother or father or brother or my grandparents, but I’d be the most happy if my sister-in-law could spend one more day with my brother.     This month is her first anniversary alone, her first Christmas alone, and her first New Year’s Eve alone in over 45 years. Next month it will be a year since his unexpected death.

They drove up to their cabin property one afternoon last January to make sure everything was okay in the snow and they got stuck.   There was no one around for miles and the cellular phones didn’t work.   Chick tried to dig them out and had a heart attack and died.     Eileen was stuck on the mountain for hours in the freezing cold.    It was a nightmare.    It was devastating.   He was only sixty six … and a young sixty six at that … and he had always had good health.

Oh how I wish that family could have one more Christmas together … husband and wife, children, grandchildren.      We never know, do we?   It’s easy to take things for granted but we should always remember how quickly things can change … and take advantage of the precious times we have with our families.
