My First Car … an English Ford Anglia

anglia-press

This isn’t my actual car.   I bought my car used for $500.00, but it was still sporty looking.    My car didn’t have a back seat and seemed shorter in length than this picture.   The two seats it did have were very low in the car … perfect for teenagers but I can’t imagine very comfortable to get in and out of for old ladies.    It was about as small inside as the first Volkswagon Beetles … so small that one day I had a blow out on my way home from work right by some men doing road construction.    Two of them came over to help me.   One lifted the back of the car up while the other one changed the tire.   It seemed like I was back on my way in less than 2 minutes!    My friends dubbed my car the “Maytag” because the center part of the car was about the same size as a Maytag washing machine.    More than once I came out of the mall to find that someone had lifted and moved my car to a new spot.    The tires weren’t  very big.    I loved that little car.   The farthest I took it was on a trip from Draper, Utah, to Idaho Falls with my high school chum, Donna.   We had a blast in it and I know somewhere there are pictures but I haven’t been able to find them.

  1. What an odd little car! I gotta check out more about this. Cool post.

  2. OH, in looking at the older models, I remember that this was the HOT car body to use in pro drag racing. “Gassers” they were called. Awesome.
My neighbor in the 70′s actually had an Anglia gasser. I never saw it race, but he started it for me… and probably added to my hearing loss!

  3. I wish I could find the picture of my car. I remember it as the front part and back part being the same size and the middle part being only about as far as the door part of this
