Me Vs. The Other Me

I’m having a hard time getting rid of some of the stuff I don’t need. Stuff I don’t have room for even.

Me: “Do it! Do it! Do it!”

The Other Me: “We might want it later.”

Me: “Get outta here. I want to get rid of it.”

The Other Me: “But We’ve had it so long.”

Me: “Just because I buy something I am not its mother forever. It’s just a thing.

The Other Me: “Oh yeah, well it reminds us of when the kids were little.”

Me: “So does Gerber Baby Food and you don’t see jars of that in my pantry.”

The Other Me: ” Well this was given to us as a gift by a family member.”

Me: “Yeah, and I loved it for a long time, now it is collecting dust behind cupboard doors.”

Okay, so I have discovered a lot of new pencils that are really old pencils, you know? The erasures don’t even work. Stuff like that. The problem is with all the moves in and out of kids over the years I have emptied rooms and boxed things up to make room … then when I need what I boxed up I couldn’t find it so I bought more.

Me: “I just decided, the old pencils go … no argument, you hear?”

The Other Me: “Okay … pencils can go.”

Me: “Whew, now can we talk about these fake plants?”

The Other Me: “They still look good to me! Maybe some day we’ll want to use them again.”

Me: The stored fake plants have to go!”

The Other Me: “I need some Tylenol. Hey, why are you getting rid of that clock?”

I wish the other me would take a long nap.

  1. I can relate to this! Although, I am much better at throwing things out than I used to be. I have a hard time with sentimental things more than anything. I hate to throw out stuff the kids bring home from school…but I know I can’t keep everything!

  2. Hi Edna, I’m a friend of Kim’s, I remember seeing you when you came to visit not too long ago. Anway, I thought I’d check out your blog and this was the first post. I must recommend this book:
Clear your Clutter with Feng Shui by Karen Kingston.

I think I came across it on an LDS homeschool site once. Anyway, I loved it. It was a real eye opener for me. I’m not a real bad pack rat but it helped me see the things that I do hang onto and reasons I shouldn’t. Don’t be turned off by the Feng Shui thing. You can totally take her advise regardless of your feeling on that. Anyway, try it out. I hope it helps. ~Keli

  3. Been there, done that, Edna. Almost daily in fact. In spite of the progress I make, I’m still fighting the holding on to things syndrome. You know that old saying, “Two steps forward, one step back,” or is it vice versa?” Well. That’s me. The book sounds interesting though. Maybe I’ll look for it, since I’m well aware that holding onto things beyond practical use is psychological. (How’s the book coming?)
