Lynn bowls me over

Lynn and I went bowling today.   He bowled 129 and I bowled 111, which for me is probably the highest score of my life.    It reminded me of our second official “date”.   We grew up together in the small town of Draper and our best friends were siblings so we spent time together all our lives doing non-dates.

When he got home from his mission I was 19 and he was 22 and that sort of changed how we looked at each other from then on … and I found I was looking at him a lot.   We were in a Christmas play together for church … He was Mr. Baxter and I was Mrs. Baxter and we started riding to practice and then I’d go with him to watch him play basketball for the church team … but still … they weren’t official dates.   However the match had been struck and the flame was starting to grow.

So it was just a natural that I would ask him to my office Christmas party.  I worked at State Farm Insurance at the time.    The party was a dinner dance that included steak and lobster in Park City and I’d say it was a big hit.

So between Christmas and New Year’s when Lynn called me up to go bowling I was pretty excited and happy and immediately said yes.    His brother, Marvin, and a friend Kathy Smith and Lynn and I went … so I found out it wasn’t really a date like I’d thought.    In fact, Kathy paired off with Lynn and I paired off with Marvin … but I still call it our second date just because we’d had a first date.

Lynn was a good bowler and I was a bad bowler.   In fact in those days I was mostly a gutter ball bowler … even at 19.    My favorite part of the bowling was when Lynn would get up to bowl.    He had this little ritual he went through that I liked to watch from behind … well let’s face it … I thought he had a good looking behind.

Anyway, today when we went bowling it brought back a lot of memories.    Isn’t it funny how those memories are stored in the mind and then a trigger brings them forward and you remember events from the past so well (but can’t remember if you took your pills that morning?)

So here’s a picture of Lynn bowling today.     Forty-three years have passed since our second date … and there have been a lot of changes in our lives … including the shape of the bowling ball and the length of the bowling alley, thanks to Wii.
