Lazy, Hazy Crazy Days of Summer

I’m talking about the good old days here … the days of …

1.  Laying on the grass watching the fluffy cloud formations … back before the knees went and I could still get up off the ground by myself

2.  1982 kids with lemonade stand Lemonade stands like this one when you actually made a profit because there weren’t gas stations on every corner with 32 ounce drinks for less than 50 cents a piece

3.  Riding bikes and roaming the South Hills above Draper … where it is now covered with homes.

4.   Walking anywhere in town without any worries … except from the local bullies you learned to avoid.    Lynn remembers being held upside down by the heels over a fast moving canal by one of them … my two older brothers pretty much protected me from any of those terrorists.

5.    Swings that went out over the swimming holes created by damming up the irrigation ditches and canals that ran behind our homes.

6.   Sleeping out in the back yard and counting stars while we talked about boys and movie stars … lots of giggles.

7.    Gardening … the taste of a hot tomato picked right off the vine, sweet peas, green beans, and delicious corn on the cob.    I used to earn a penny gathering tomato worms off the rows and rows of tomato’s in our garden.

8.    Drive in movies with a picnic, pj’s, and pillows

9.   Running through the sprinklers on a hot afternoon … water fights

10.  The Draper parade and the smell of Dad’s clown paint.    He’d walk the parade route with a sad face because his left hand was stuck in a glass pitcher … and he kissed all the old ladies who waited with anticipation for his undivided attention.Lewy_the_clown

11.   Picnics in the canyons before the days of bacterial and nasty things growing in the water … where we could lay on our bellies and get a nice, cold drink straight from the creek

12.   Barbeques in the back yard on the open pit Dad built next to the bowery Dad built

13.   Family parties with the cousins and grandparents …

Now THOSE were the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer!

  1. Oh, that lemonade stand picture made me laugh. It is hard to tell by the picture just how much administrative work was involved in that lemonade stand. Of course, being at the bottom of the ladder, I didn’t have to put in the long office hours that the others did. I just had to put in the long standing on the street with a sign hours. That box is actually the “office” (aka: shade) and I didn’t hold and executive title so I wasn’t allowed in there. I believe the others had titles such as: president, ceo, and director. I remember when we ran out of lemonade so Virginia filled out pitcher with Tang. It was the first time I had ever had Tang and I thought it was the best drink the world.

I think I will have to write a similar post with my top summer memories.
