Is That a Little Crooked Smile?
“The sky is falling, the sky is falling!” Not to worry. It’s not the sky. It’s our roof.
Apparently our home was built with green, knotted lumber way back when, and over the years that lumber dried out and twisted and caused cracks in the walls and ceilings. The latest thing we found is that our rafters have been affected and are no longer able to support the roof, which is not only leaking, it is sagging dangerously. The light tiles we put on ten years ago (which we thought would last for our lifetime) have to go, and then it’s time to rebuild, reinforce, and repair so we can put a steel roof on. Steel? Isn’t that kinda noisy? I keep thinking: “Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain, pitter patter CLITTER CLATTER!”
You retire and suddenly everything wears out at once; the house, the cars, the clothes, the shoes, the joints, the muscles, the teeth, the brain. That’s because you’re in the Golden Years … and it takes all your money.
This is us ….
“There was a Little crooked man and his little crooked wife,
Who lived in a little crooked house, most of their married life.
It took all their crooked sixpences to fix their crooked stuff,
And they finally stood together and yelled “Enough’s Enough!”
Now, isn’t that worth a little crooked smile? Have a great day! (And my apologies to Mother Goose.)
This is a picture of a book like the one I had for years and years, the one I used while I held every one of my five children from babyhood to childhood … reading and singing her clever poetry. Thank you Mother Goose for all those sweet memories with my babies.

I remember that book! I will have to find that edition for my kids.
I am so sorry about your roof. That just doesn’t seem fair so soon after retirement!
Ugh, that’s not good. Around here a lot of roofs are metal and when we moved here I’d never been in one when the snow slides off… sounds like an avalanche on your roof! But you get used to it! At least you don’t have lots of snow there!
At least you haven’t lost your sense of humor! As long as that is the last thing to go, you’ll be okay!
I still have that book, too! I’m a big fan of children’s books – though I do not have any.
I actually love the sound of rain on a steel roof… but that doesn’t excuse the headache of replacing one.
That’s good to know, Jane! About the sound of rain on the steel roof. I think I will decide to like it too!
My older sister & I were just commiserating via email the other day about reaching the age where we’ve having to have all our antique tooth fillings replaced. I told her it’s a bad news/ good news story. The bad news is you’ve reached an age where you have to have your fillings replaced. The good news is you’ve reached an age where you have to have your fillings replaced!
Folks around here put tin roofs on porches, just so they can open a window and hear the rain.
