God’s Gifts

Tonight, alone in the quiet dark, I watched the movie, Copying Beethoven.   It brought me to tears more than once as I listened to his beautiful creations and thought how it must have been for him to have this gift from God in his head and because of his deafness never actually hear it through his ears … never hear the finished product soar from the orchestral instruments and voices of the choir.

Since the movie ended I’ve been sitting here meditating and wishing it wasn’t the middle of the night so I could search out my classical CD’s and play them loud enough to fill my pores with the magnificent sounds and tones of his music.

The show portrayed him as hearing his music in nature … the fields and mountains, the wind and the rain and sun.    As I think about some of the breathtaking scenes I’ve seen throughout my life I can almost hear it myself … the Grand Canyon, the waves of the ocean breaking on the rocks and sands of the shore, the stillness of the forest with the tall trees that block out the sunlight and sway gently high above my head.   Sometimes smells from the blooming flowers catch a ride on the breeze that floats by as if it were cut from the lightest silk.    The cliffs of Zion’s National Park, or the force behind Old Faithful have their own beautiful music as does the sizzle of the desert on a hot August day, the sparkling snow colored sands of White Sands, New Mexico.

Love sings a hymn of its own when I look into Lynn’s blue eyes or quietly rocking a sleeping baby.

There is music in my heart when I stop and allow it to be there.   I can’t write it down and share it but I know it is there to strengthen my own soul and fill me with joy.  I just need to slow down and acknowledge it.

There is beauty and peace around us.      Today I felt it near the Canadian border as as we tossed bread to the seagulls and watched the setting sun create swirling colors of gold, pinks, reds, and blues in the western sky.     I remember thinking, “If Heaven is more beautiful than this we have a great treat in store.”

  1. That is indeed a cool video! I think I’d heard of that somewhere before, but never actually seen it!

  2. Beautiful.

  3. Now that was cool! I love music and anyone who knows me, knows that if your looking for something to listen to, I probably have it! I have an 80gb Zune and 50gigs are no longer available, that’s a lot of music that includes everything from classical to Ryan Henke to TOOL. Just whatever I’m in the mood for and today Amy and I were definitely in the mood for the song of those cool little birds! Thanks

  4. Pretty cool! I love seeing birds on a wire when I travel…a sort of bird conference, but I didn’t know they were composing. Glad somebody was smart enough to figure it out. Really, that’s pretty neat.
