Flight of The Hummingbirds

I was so lucky to be there when Tiny Bird took flight.     It flew under our porch roof and straight at me and it scared the poor thing so bad it screamed and took off for the tree.    You can see it hanging upside down on the branch way up in the tree.    It hung there for thirty minutes before it got the nerve to fly again and perch upright on another branch.

The first, bigger baby flew off to parts unknown … and then Mama Bird came back and looked in her nest and flew right in front of me as if to  ask what I had done with her babies.    I was too astonished to take a picture.  Then she flew to look back in the nest and went and sat on a branch in the tree and cocked her head and listened.     Soon she heard her baby a little higher up and went and fed her.   I thought I had got the perfect picture of that but apparently I didn’t … Darn it!    It was such a cute site.   Tiny Bird was so happy to see it’s mommy.

Things we people can learn from hummingbirds:     First of all … babies need a safe home that is protected from the elements and bad influences of the world.   The parent’s role is absolutely critical to their survival … and that means 100% focused on the child’s needs.    I also learned that it takes a lot of tenacity and strength to survive even with the parent’s help.     And … I learned it is a big day when they move out … when they grow too big for the nest and it’s fly or fall.       It was such a fun  thing to watch it from the building of the nest through today.     Thank you Mrs. Hummingbird!

I guess this means I need to find more topics to write about now.   I have been so busy cleaning the garage and organizing stuff I haven’t been as diligent as I should be.   I’ll make the effort to do better.

  4. You forgot this lesson: Sometimes it’s okay to have Christmas lights up in May ;-)

  5. And this lesson…sometimes it is okay to be hanging upside down and gripping the branch for dear life…you know now you can fly!…and you know your momma is gonna come cheer you on soon.

  6. Warren, you are so funny. I still don’t like Christmas lights hanging on the house in May! But … in this case it WAS fun to watch the birds.

Kim that is a good point! I think sometimes even my momma comes to cheer me on … I just wish I could see her!
