A Good Day After All

“Grandma, I think this has been the worst day ever … of my entire life so far,” sobbed 7 year old Chloe as I rocked her and snuggled her tight.    She sported 2 fresh, huge knots on the back of her head from a fall out of a neighbor’s swing onto brick paving, then later a neighbor boy had done one too many jumps on her scooter and broke it, and just a bit after that the little threesome of girlfriends that had been playing together abruptly turned into a twosome and Chloe was odd girl out.     “That is a lot of hard stuff for one day,” I agreed.

FrescaSeatbelt Lady Fresca, our newly acquired little Bichon, could hardly stand to see Chloe’s tears either so the three of us decided we’d better do something to turn this day around.     We piled into the Maxima and headed off for parts unknown … Chloe’s choice … so surprise of all  surprises we found ourselves at the McDonald’s drive through where we purchased some semi-healthy lunch to take to the park.     I say semi-healthy because, along with Chloe’s Happy Meal (cheeseburger with no pickles, mustard, or onions and fries) she chose juice.   ChloeFrescarocks I had a grilled chicken salad … and a  HUGE diet coke.   I call that a balanced meal on the worst day of someone’s life … so far.

By the time we got to the park, Chloe was starting to feel pretty perky, but it was Fresca who really saved the day.   She seemed to know just what to do to mend a sad little heart.     Chloe took her around the park on her leash, and the two of them immediately had a following of new friends. slide Fresca is such a sweet little poochie … she kissed all the kids and even a couple of the mama’s and a daddy.    The highlight of the day was when she went down the slippery slide with Chloe and all the kids … and then turned and ran right back up the steps with her for more.

By the time we came home both of my girls were tired … but happy.  And so was I when Chloe gave me a big hug and smile and whispered “I love you Grandma, this was a good day after all.”

  1. I’m glad the day turned out so well. Dogs have a way of helping you feel better, don’t they? You’re a good grandma. Chloe is a lucky little girl. Give her my best.

  2. Hi,
I’m glad you had a good day.
Grandkid, comfort food, puppy at the park is a good combination.
